Mason Creek Utility District has reduced its tax rate by more than 22%. At its regular September meeting, the District's Board set a 1999 tax rate of 35 cents per $100, down from 45 cents in
1998. This is the second year in a row the district has lowered it tax rate.
The District provides water and sewer services for most of Nottingham Country subdivision, Sections 1 through 9, located south of
Interstate Highway 10 between Fry Road and Westgreen.
"Not only are taxes going down, but our facilities are actually getting better," said Board President Len Forsyth. "We now have four
water wells, all interconnected, with elevated storage, ground storage and generator back-ups for emergencies," he added.
In Sections 1 through 9 of Nottingham Country, most of the homes were built in the
1970's and 1980's. Many of the streets are lined by oaks and other large trees. As District Vice-President Larry Beustring pointed out, "Nottingham Country has a great community association and some of
the most well-established schools and churches in the area. Mason Creek Utility District is especially proud of its joint project with the Nottingham Country Community Improvement Association to establish the new
5-acre greenspace and park on Rennie, just south of Kingsland Boulevard." Board member and Secretary-Treasurer Leon King observed: "Property values in Nottingham Country have been rising, and lower
taxes can only help encourage that trend."
Trey Hamblet, investment officer of the District and also a member of the Board, pointed out that "a long tradition of conservative financial practices"
had helped to make it possible to lower the tax rate. He noted that previous Boards carefully built and saved the District's reserve funds, and "now they are helping to pay off the District's bonds and lower
the tax rate."
The 1999 tax decrease is the second in a row for Mason creek Utility District. Since 1997, Hamblet said, "the District's tax rate has fallen by a whopping 42%," from 60.5 cents
to the current rate of 35 cents.
